Emu products

A few years ago we had the opportunity to rescue a mob of Emu's destined to be terminated due to unfortunate circumstances. In addition to a lot of time and patience,  it required a lot of work as they were quite a "Wild" mob and Emu's can be very difficult to handle when "wound up". However the rescue effort was successful and they were resettled to our farm where they are now very happy. They regularly  "boom" out their drumming tunes for us (one, "Lady" is a real singer...er.."Boomer"?)  and they have even given us a few more beautiful feathered friends to raise as well. They eat us out of house and home, but provide beautiful treasures each year including many hours of entertainment.  We recoup some of their upkeep cost through the sale of some of their treasures below.

                        Emu Eggs

Cleaned and  Blown Out,  beautiful emerald green Emu Eggs from our mob of Emuseme girls! They are perfect addition to an egg collection or for arts and crafts, painting, carving, etching or simply as an intriguing conversation piece. Our Emu Eggs are in excellent condition. They have one small hole approximately 3/16" (5mm) dia in one end through which they were blown out and cleaned.

Eggs are only available while we have stock as the girls only lay for a couple months over the winter. The pictures are generic photos of Emu Eggs laid by our Emu hens. Each Emu hen lays eggs that can be a slightly different  size, shape, shade of green, and even texture from other hens eggs. Because of this, the Emu Egg or Eggs that you order may differ in size, shape, color and texture from the pictures and from each other.  That being said, most of our eggs are very similar to each other and to what the images show.

Size:

As you can see most are  approx 3" dia x 5" long give or take

These pictures were taken outside on a sunny day.

Besides making a great display and conversation piece, or addition to your collection...

What else can be done with them?

Here are a few pictures from the internet of Emu eggs that have been carved by talented artists using the different colored layers in the shell and dye's to make beautiful works of art. Some artists do incredible work!

Emu Eggshell pieces

Blowing eggs can be tricky and occasionally we break one. However, like most things around here,  the broken shells do not get tossed as they have other uses. They are popular for jewelry making. The bits & pieces can be shaped, carved with designs, and even died like the full eggs to be used for earrings, necklaces and broaches to name a few uses.

Item# ES01

1 Baggie of bits and pieces, approximately one shell worth.  Most pieces are over 1"  but we also throw in the little bits incase you can use them too.    $8 ea.

Emu Feathers

Emu feathers are very unique in that they are double plumed on a single quill. There are actually two feathers per quill.   The other unique thing about Emu feathers is they are not barbed and interlocked to form a solid feather, each frond is free from the next giving the feather a very free flowing character. The "tail" feathers are longer, stiffer, and much coarser with greater separation between fronds.  Emu feathers are great for all kinds of fiber crafts including earrings and hair extensions and they can be dyed virtually any color as they take dye well. They are also great for fly tying too! Give some to your favorite  fly fishermen and ask if they've ever seen a hackle feather this long???

Please Note:  The feathers in the pictures shown are not the actual feathers that you will receive, however they will be very similar in length and color.  The pictures are stock photos for example only also....the pictures don't do the unique feathers justice. ;-(   they are really kool !

Emu's are always preening and keeping themselves clean and they love to bath. It's quite entertaining to watch too! We gather the Emu feathers whenever we see them, but especially during feeding in the morning when we're milling about in the pens with the birds.  We must be careful to keep the feathers hidden as the curious birds like to pluck them out of our hands and run off with them.

We wash them lightly so they are clean for you, ready to use as is or to dye.

A baggie of a Min.10pc nice, cleaned & complete feathers  (actually there are 10 quills with 2 feather plumes ea.)   You'll actually get more than 10 quills as we usually put some not so perfect extras or perhaps single plumes in as extras for you.   The feathers are available in small, medium & large lengths and will vary roughly within the designated size.
